Sweet political correctness
A hopefully humorous article about political correctness, about what would happen if a popular British sweet or candy which has a potentially politically incorrect brand name were re-branded with a more politically correct brand name.
The sweets are called ‘Midget Gems’ and they are a fruity chewy kind of sweet.
Ok, here goes:
A popular brand of British sweet called ‘Midget Gems’ is to be banned because the word ‘midget’ might be offensive.
In future Midget Gems are to be re-branded as ‘Persons Of Diminished Stature Gems.’
Persons Of Diminished Stature Gems, which were previously kind of cone shaped, will now be supplied in the shape of a person of diminished stature.
The idea is, each time we pop a Persons Of Diminished Stature Gem into our mouths it will, ah, raise awareness of persons of diminished stature – possibly to new heights.
“I think that it’s a wonderful idea” enthused a spokesperson for the pressure group that campaigned for the re-branding.
“Enjoying a Midget Gem was a pleasure, but we decided that this was socially irresponsible.”
“Enjoying a Persons Of Diminished Stature Gem however is socially responsible. It will remind us of our obligation to help those – in fact elevate those – who are less fortunate than ourselves.”
Persons of Diminished Stature Gems will be available in three different sizes - a completely undiminished size, a slightly less diminished size, and a diminished size.
It is felt that this is less likely to cause offence than large, medium and small.
