A British former woman police officer performed a raunchy Britney Spears act on a TV talent show
Ex police officer Tara Stafford-Allen stripped down from a school uniform to revealing shorts and top and sang the Britney Spears hit `Kiss me baby one more time’ on the show.
She had been suffering from a health problem during the week before she was due to perform her act live on TV and didn’t feel too good during her performance but she was determined to go ahead with it. She said during rehearsals “I’m just going to do it and hope it’s all right.”
The judges paid tribute to her determination and the audience and judges voted her performance a hit, along with a Madonna and Diana Ross tribute act.
The show, called `The only and only’ is broadcast by the BBC throughout Britain, and viewers vote for their favourite act by ‘phone.
TV tribute shows like this are really rooted in the old British tradition of the pub `singalong’, when pub drinkers would sing popular tunes which were played on the pub piano, either by one of the drinkers or (more usually) by a professional or semi-professional pianist.
Quite often one of the drinkers would sing alone, accompanied by the pianist, and also quite often the other drinkers would vote on his performance, either with applause or with ribald instructions to conclude his performance, depending on how talented he was and perhaps on how tolerant or discerning the audience was.
These days pubs with pianos are unusual, and the pub singalong has more-or-less vanished from British life.
It has been replaced by karaoke, when pub drinkers can volunteer to sing popular songs that are played on the pub’s sound system, with the words of the song appearing on a screen. Some pubs organise karaoke competitions, and some of the more talented karaoke singers graduate to regularly performing in these competitions.
It’s possible that they might graduate from this to appearing in TV talent shows like the BBC `The one and only’ show and perhaps eventually becoming professional singers.
