Cause and effect English
In English, there are several ways of saying the same thing. For example, there are two ways of describing cause and effect – how one event can affect another event. One way of describing cause and effect is to write something like this: `because of this (the first event), this (the second event) happened. For example: `because it was raining, I used my umbrella.’
Another way of describing cause and effect is to use `so’ rather than `because of.’ For example: `it was raining so I used my umbrella’ rather than `because it was raining, I used my umbrella.’
One advantage of using `because of’ is, it makes the words that follow seem important. This can be useful if you are writing to a company to apply for a job.
If you write: `because of my qualifications, I feel that I am the ideal candidate for this vacancy,’ it makes your qualifications seem important. If you write: `I feel that I am the ideal candidate for this vacancy because of my qualifications,’ it doesn’t make your qualifications seem quite so important.
Really, this is using basic psychology, as well as using good English. Because of this*, it might be useful for someone who is applying for a job with any nationality of employer, not just a British employer. For example, it might be useful for someone who is applying for a job with an American company which has a base in the UK.
British and Americans, who speak English as their first language, could use the technique when they are applying for a job in their respective countries.
*note the use of `because of this’
