Missing person story
These photos were taken for a missing person story, which as a photojournalist I supplied to a British local newspaper.
They are of the missing person herself, her partner or lover, and some of the people and things in her life.
Photo 1 is of the missing person, a middle aged woman, with her grand daughter: photos 2 to 4 are of the missing person’s partner: photo 5 is of some of the things she left behind – personal photographs, dolls, etc., and photo 5 is of the missing person as a young woman, with various members of her family. Photos 1 and 5 are photos of photos of the missing person.
The newspaper published photo 2, a photo of the missing persons’ partner looking anxiously into the distance, to suggest that he is looking for her, with the story.
Possible conflict with photos of missing person
With regard to the photograph which the newspaper used, it occurs to me that there might be a conflict between the requirements of the media and the requirements of those that the missing person left behind.
The newspaper obviously believed that a photograph of the missing person’s partner was the best photograph to publish. This was probably because it might evoke more sympathy with the newspaper’s readers than the other photographs.
But her family might believe that a photograph of her with her family would be the best photograph to publish.
This might be because they are not too concerned about evoking the sympathy of the newspaper’s readers.
They might believe that if she saw a photograph of herself with her family in the newspaper, she might be tempted to contact her family.
