Backpacking or camera backpack problem
Most backpacks are primarily designed for backpacking – for storing travel stuff, rather than for storing cameras and camcorders. Other backpacks, often called camera backpacks, are primarily designed for storing cameras and camcorders rather than for travel stuff
This article looks at a camera backpack and tries to find out if it will also be suitable for backpacking

It’s a Lowepro ‘nature trekker’ backpack, and I haven’t opened it yet, so I have no idea what compartments and pockets it has – I have no idea whether it will be ok to store a camcorder, camera and travel stuff in these compartments and pockets.
Making the backpack problem even worse
One thing I should make clear is, I believe that it’s designed for days out – for a single day’s backpacking. I don’t think that it’s designed for long-distance backpacking, for carrying travel stuff for days, weeks or months.
So really, this experiment is pretty unfair; I’m trying to find out whether something that isn’t designed to do something can do it anyway.
Also, it might not be a very conclusive experiment, for the following reason; the kind of cameras and camcorders that I try to fit into it might not be the same kind of cameras and camcorders that someone else would try to fit into it.
The same applies to travel stuff, I’ll try to pack into it what I think I would need for a backpacking trip of several days, weeks or months, but someone else might have different ideas about this, they might want to pack different travel stuff into it.
If you’re interested in photography or videography and if you have several cameras and lenses a backpack like this isn’t a risky investment. Basically, it’s a camera rucksack, and it can be used for this purpose even if you don’t plan to use it as a backpacking backpack.
Backpack image problem
There might be a slight image problem with this, however. If you do your photography or videography in formal situations – hotels, wedding venues, that kind of thing, a backpack might look out of place.
Or rather, a backpack like this, which is obviously designed for rugged outdoor use – it’s a drawstring backpack, for one thing, might look out of place.
In a future post I’ll open the thing up.
