Historical backpacking map
Map of travel destination popular with backpackers
This is a map of Tully and district, in north Queensland, Australia, a town which was and still is pretty popular with backpackers.
Working like a dog
It’s the center of the sugar cane growing region, and it was just about possible to get work there, as long as you were patient. I kind of slunk around for over a week asking for a job before I finally got one.

All work and no play
Tully is in a pretty strategic location. It’s close to the Great Barrier Reef and is overlooked – maybe even overshadowed, by Mount Tyson, a big mountain. Naturally I went out to the Reef but also climbed Mount Tyson a couple of times.
Take great care climbing Mount Tyson, it can be dangerous. There are all kinds of hidden falls – places where you can fall and get hurt.
