Laser printer size compatability

One reason why there are so many laser printers on the market is because some buyers demand a small ‘footprint’, or the amount of space that the laser printer takes up

Smaller laser printers are sometimes called ‘desktop’ laser printers because they fit on a desktop without taking up too much space.
The problem is, what constitutes not taking up too much space and what constitutes taking up too much space?
This depends on at least a couple of factors: one factor, which is a pretty important factor but one that is sometimes overlooked, is the size of the desk – the size of the available space.
DesksĀ  vary; some are small computer desks, often about 3 feet x 2 feet, while others are much larger, quite often they are about 5 feet x 4 feet.
These larger desks are sometimes called ‘office desks’, because they have been designed for spacious offices. Computer desks, on the other hand, have usually been designed for small studies and bedrooms.
A laser printer that has a fairly small footprint on a large desk will have quite a large footprint on a smaller desk.
It’s a good idea to consider the size of desk that the laser printer will be placed on when selecting the printer.
One solution is to note the measurements of the printer – the length and width, as supplied by the manufacturer, and copy these measurements onto your desk.
This can be done with a piece of chalk; the chalk lines that you have marked out for the printer can easy be wiped off with a damp cloth afterwards.
